Uduak (Udie) Osom holds a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Speech and Language Pathology from San Jose State University. Licensed in California, she is a certified member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and a member of the California Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Udie has worked with children for more than 19 years and draws upon her extensive background, when making clinical decisions. Her experience as an early/preschool teacher has afforded her the expertise of understanding typical developmental milestones. Udie’s speech pathology career spanned from the public schools, private clinics and Children’s Hospital Oakland. She has carried out extensive research and conducted numerous seminars in her area of expertise: feeding, oral motor function and social language. Her passion for understanding speech and language problems has led her to research, develop programs, and open a clinical practice that helps children and families. Her hope is that her clinic will help children and young adults with developmental disabilities learn, progress, and become happy and functional members of our society.
In Udie’s extensive work with children and young adults, she identified a huge gap in services available for children with speech and language problems. At the time, there were few or no programs to assist children with speech and language problems in learning successful social skills. In an effort to help children with disabilities to more easily integrate into social situations, Udie developed the Paired Pragmatic Language Program (PPLP) in 2000. The PPLP stands apart as a social skill program because children with disabilities work with typical peers as their communication partner, while immersed in real-life situations in the community. The program helps typical peers learn tolerance and understanding, and allows the children with social communication language disorders (e.g. ASD, ADD, Downs Syndrome and other social cognitive language disorder) to practice social interaction in functional daily situations. This program has helped numerous families transition their children more successfully into functional social situations.
Udie has recruited exceptional Speech and Language Pathologists for her private practice, Innovative Therapy Services. The staff at Innovative Therapy Services share Udie’s technical expertise and philosophical commitment to helping children and families with language disabilities to thrive. Her practice holds regular Round Table meetings to review strategize and optimize treatment plans for all the clients. Udie continues to be actively involved with all her clients by meeting with parents, observing clients within the clinic and off site when necessary.
